The managing director of the Indian Railway Stations Development Cooperation, IRSDC, Mr. Sanjeev Kumar Lohia, and the Green founder Johan Berhin was in a panel on Passenger Experience at the InnoMetro Summit 2021.
After the panel, they continued the discussion in the green room and decided to do a Green pilot installation at Bengaluru Central Station to create a modern, sustainable station experience.
The challenge
The railways in India are for the people and are used more than anywhere on the planet. Today, people spend their time waiting on the floor or on scarce metal benches, which is not optimal for the passengers or the surrounding business.
A significant investment plan has been launched across the country to increase the passenger experience, encouraging more people to choose the train over flying for long-distance travel.
How can this significant change be made visible to the passengers in a way that they feel that “wow, Indian Railways have become so nice?”
The Green solution
The start of modern railway station revolution began at Bengaluru station. The installation of Green’s placemaking seating, Nova C, increased seating by 30-50%, introducing a more welcoming atmosphere with seating that goes with the building, increasing the quality of stay for travelers and visitors.
The start of a modern railway station revolution began at Bengaluru station. Green’s placemaking seating installation, the modular Nova C series, has created a welcoming atmosphere and radically improved the waiting experience. The seamless seating has been configured in line with the building and the large flow of people, increasing the seating capacity manifold.
The Nova C series generally increase the seating capacity by 30-50% compared to traditional seats on a beam. Still, the capacity effect is often even larger as seating can also be placed in new places without interfering with ped flow. See a great example of an almost tripled seating capacity at London Victoria Station.
The result
Before Green placemaking
There was a big and empty space where the visitors just walked through to get to the train. No where to sit left people sitting on the floor.
Design concept
Choosing a colour and shape that fits with the building. Creating an inviting place without blocking the traffic flow for efficiency in crowded hours.
Modular solution to fit the building
Transformation into a modern railway station, and with the modular concept, we worked with the architecture of the "old" building, keeping the history alive. The visitors love it, and people can now sit and enjoy the waiting time, with space for luggage, food, and charging devices. Green's solution brings 30-50% more seating capacity than traditional seating.
Nova C made it to Bengaluru station, India!
